The National Multiple Sclerosis Society mobilizes people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS. The National MS Society is offering an exciting internship opportunity within the Development department. The unpaid internship can provide school credit and offers valuable experience in the non-profit, fundraising and event planning industries. The office is located in Southfield, Michigan.

As Intern, Walk MS you will gain valuable experience learning about the planning and execution of fundraising events by working closely with the Walk MS and volunteer management team. You will assist in communicating with event participants and identify opportunities to market Chapter events and encourage event registration and fundraising. You will work with the Society's internal database and participant management systems throughout the internship to provide reporting and data management learning opportunities. You will also have the opportunity to observe staff and learn how they coordinate with sponsors, participants and donors to plan and execute successful special events. Timing of the internship will be a fixed duration contingent on the student's schedule and needs.

The applicant must have excellent customer service skills and be detail-orientated. Strong interpersonal, time management and team work skills are a must. Prior experience in fundraising, planning, organizing and managing events is helpful. Good oral and written communication skills are requested. May require attendance at special events taking place on weeknights along with weekends (Saturdays and/or Sundays).

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
Day to Day
  • Communicate with event participants and identify opportunities to encourage participation in Chapter events and encourage event registration and fundraising
  • Work with the Society's internal database and participant management systems to provide reporting and data management learning opportunities
  • Participate in Walk MS Operational Plan and activities
  • Observe staff and learn how they coordinate with sponsors, participants and donors to plan and execute successful special events
  • Administer Walk MS Tour Acknowledgement Program
Specific Responsibilities
  • Assist Walk MS team with relationship management tasks and functions
  • Work with Society volunteers to manage and prepare for FY19 Walk MS events
  • Understand the MS Society, our goals and main functions to end MS forever while working as one team
