The Accounting Manager is a key member of the National MS Society Finance team reporting to the Controller and is responsible for accounting oversight of cash, investments, endowments, and grant management performing day-to-day general ledger activities supporting the Controller, Accounting Managers, and Finance Strategy team in the closing of the Society's books at both month and year-end. The position will also work in partnership with key Society research and alliance team members to review the current grant management process flow and establish a quarterly accounting reconciliation process ensuring the accuracy of all outbound grant payments and balance sheet reporting. As a primary function, this position processes primarily routine but also at times complex in preparing account reconciliations and reviewing general ledger activity. The position must demonstrate a strong ability to work without frequent direction, to manage their time and multiple priorities.

Essential Function/Responsibility
1. Accounting and Operational Efficiency
  • Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of General Ledger financial reporting and operations to support the monthly accounting closing process and ensure proper cut-offs for reporting are met.
  • Perform account reconciliations in an accurate and timely manner, ensuring that account discrepancies found are resolved timely.
  • Review account analysis statements for all cash, investments, and endowments creating monthly journal entries as required.
  • Review payroll and benefits monthly journal entries and account reconciliations prepared by direct report.
  • Record approved grant expenses and maintain reconciliations to both the General Ledger and Fluxx grant system.
  • Review and reconcile outbound grant payments ensuring proper approvals.
  • Create and assist with the production of various financial reports for multiple entities.
  • Participate in regular research, grant, and Fast Forward alliance meetings and build positive working relationships with all staff
  • Identify training and process improvement opportunities to maximize Society resources and organizational goals.
  • Assist with other special projects as needed including ERP implementation.
2. Supervision
  • Develop, assign and review monthly account analysis and journal entries prepared by direct reports and/or other accounting team members.
  • Conduct internal reviews to verify the accuracy of records and compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Assist with and review Accountants monthly General Ledger close process ensuring proper reporting cut-offs and identify areas of opportunity and improvement.
  • Identify the need for new accounts or retirement of old accounts ensuring that new accounts are properly reflected in reporting.
  • Consult with senior management and staff on business and financial matters as required providing direction and training to direct report

3. Audit
  • Assist with the preparation of all year-end workpapers as assigned by the Controller and Assistant Controller or requested by the external auditors.
  • Respond to audit questions as needed.
4. Tax
  • Assist the Controller and Assistant Controller with the preparation of the annual IRS Form 990 and its supporting schedules.
5. Volunteer Engagement
  • Engage volunteers, effectively communicating and facilitating meaningful opportunities across all functions.
  • Partner with volunteers to accomplish our work.
  • Cultivate volunteers, seeking and providing feedback and sharing opportunities for professional growth and development.
  • Will be required to work at several Society events and programs outside of normal business hours throughout the year.
